It's Official; FRIZZ IS IN-STYLE!!!

I’m starting to think FRIZZ is not the evil character we’ve made it out to be

Frizz has been portrayed to us as this evil creature lurking in the dark forests of dry, damaged hair. We have all made it our goal (at one time or another) to reduce/eliminate/annihilate frizz. In a past post, I even referred to frizz as the “F word” cowering in fear myself. But now I am beginning to rethink this.

Maybe frizz isn’t the bad guy. Maybe frizz just comes with the package.

I consider my hair ‘styled’ when I have done something like braids or twists to ‘set’ my hair, manipulating it to my desired ‘look’. When it is ‘styled’, it is shiny and looks polished. Most of the time, my hair is styled.  Even if it’s just a co-wash-n go, I do something to make my hair look crisp. When it is 'styled' there is very minimal frizz. In all honesty, its absence is necessary for any look to be considered a successful 'style'.

 “But what about those other days?” I asked myself. What about the days when my hair hasn’t been manipulated to look ‘done’? Is it less attractive? Is my hair less acceptable? Is it less healthy? Why do I ‘style’ my hair so often as opposed to just letting it be, which, in my case comes with frizz? Why don’t I let my hair go ‘style’-less more days than ‘styled’? Why am I hiding my frizz?

So…since  I have frizz when my hair is just chilling AND my hair requires  ‘styling’ or manipulation in order to be frizz-less, I think it is safe to say that my natural hair texture  has the word ‘frizzy’ in its description. And since I claim to accept my natural texture, I must accept the frizz. After all what is SO bad about it anyway? It’s a trademark of curly/kinky hair. Not ALL natural textures come with frizz but many do.

I’ve decided there is nothing wrong with frizz. It is simply a side dish to natural hair. Period. Frizz is a part of my hairs personality and I accept it fully.

The situation that led me to this declaration...

Last night I put my hair into 2-strand twists. Since my hair has grown so much, I experimented with using a larger section of hair per twist. I was hoping the larger twists would create a different effect from past twist outs.
The experiment went…well, I guess. {Interpretations of the outcome vary depending on what side of the frizz issue you are on.}

Because I used more hair per twist, I was not able to make the twists as tight. This left me with a looser curl pattern per twist. After fluffing my hair and getting the shape I wanted, I noticed that it was cute and shiny looking, but there was FRIZZ galore.

I immediately considered the look a failure. It was frizzy! It wasn’t in the nice springy curls I’m used to getting out of my hair. In between curls were patches of frizz, shiny frizz!

As I stood and looked at myself and my hair in the mirror, I started to feel uncomfortable with the idea that I was unhappy with my hair over a little frizz. My hair actually looked good. It was soft and conditioned looking. The looser curls gave my hair a funkier look and the frizz kind of added a “Yeah, this is how I look with no effort” attitude to the whole style. It looked….natural.

It’s official… Frizz is in-style! Tell everyone you know!

Peace
Sunshine

My hair looks the exact same way! I have frizzy part in between the curls. I've been trying to twist the frizz parts to defined them to look like the rest but maybe I shouldn't even try to do that. That's just my natural hair in it's natural state. Period.
